This is the kind of thing I would hope prepers would not be caught up in. I would hope they would have a clear head and think though their action.
Biggest snow storm of your life coming the end is near every news and tv station warning you for a week.
But what do the masses do? hey lets go out on the highway for a drive, after all it is the governments job to keep the roads clear and not allow my life to be interfered with by a snow storm. As a preper your critical thinking skills are sharpen . What would you have been doing in the week or more warning you had this was coming?
I bet it was not planning a road trip.

Problem is, weather forecasters are often wrong so people don't believe them half the time.

Incidentally, dumbest thing I ever heard was the captain of the replica Bounty putting to sea from Connecticut to Florida last year to avoid the approaching hurricane Sandy.
"A ship is safer at sea than in port" he wrote on Facebook before setting sail.
Yeah sure, the ship sank and he and a crew member drowned. The rest of the crew were recued but they must have been as dumb as the captain for volunteering to go in the first place.

Many questions, few answers about loss of HMS Bounty to hurricane Sandy - CSMonitor.com
Actually ships are safer at sea than port in a hurricane - But when you are Eff'd, you are Eff'd.

Sounds like the storm was too much, he had poor / malfunctioning equipment, or zigged into the storm when he could have zagged and made tracks out and around.

If I was a crew member of a sailing ship and the captain phoned me at home and said- "The ship's tied up at the dock but will get zapped by the approaching hurricane, so will you come and help me try to sail her out of harm's way?", my answer would be "F*** the ship and f*** you Jack,, I'm staying safe and snug at home!"

PS- this pilot decided to take off in a snowstorm, bad move-
DC-3 crashed at Ruislip, (England) in snowstorm soon after taking off from Northolt, 1946 and couldn't gain height.
5 were on board, no fatalities.

ACCIDENT REPORT PROBABLE CAUSE: "The pilot taking off when the aircraft was almost entirely covered with snow. In doing this the pilot committed an error of judgement"

I understand some people were not allowed to leave work (which is crazy when there was a ban on travel after 4 PM supposedly).

What I don't understand is why, if you have a jerk for a boss, you would not have stocked up on food, water, blankets, and extra coats, etc., in case you did end up stranded. I would also have had snowshoes, and had someone try and meet me halfway if possible (ditch one car to get back home).

I also would have tried to carpool with someone with the most capable 4x4 in exchange for buying gas and stranded supplies.

Some of these people are so full of themselves that they think they can make it. I have seen it more than enough times.

"We are hardy New Englanders" - BS. Freezing temperatures don't care where you are from.

There are fools, there are damn fools, there are GD fools, and then there are dead fools.

Heh Heh Heh... I'm in Arizona. More specifically in The Valley of the Sun - Phoenix. My desk at work is full of canned soup and ramen noodles. I have a medicine cabinet of OTC medication and a first aid kit better than the one in the EE Break Room. There is also a flashlight in there and then I keep some other stuff in the truck. If I get stuck at work for three or four days, it isn't a crisis for me.
Best scenario would be to be snowed in at work for days with a nice lady co-worker. The two of you would be a little crowded in your sleeping bag but what the hell..;)
I wouldnt have waited till the last minute to start putting Big Number 1 in a position to weather the storm in style and safety.I would have made sure there was plenty of food and a way to prep it. I would have made sure there was an alternative way to heat the place I was at. I would have made dang sure there were enough supplies that I wouldnt have to get out on the roadsso I could hunker down for a couple of weeks. I most certianly would have addressed this issues days before the storm not the day before or the day after when the shelves have been stripped clean and my options limited if any.
The advantage of being retired. If I don't want to go out and play in the snow, I stay home.
Didn't always have that choice of course, but I prepared the best I could at the time. I still keep supplies in the car and the truck, just in case.
Like the Boy Scouts motto: Be prepared.

Then there is GD fools from certain parts of the country that think they are HARDY ! ROFL!

When it comes to cold weather....If your not Inuit....shut the hell up!
The Navy always "puts out to sea" when a big storm approaches. Shit happens
I remember conducting flight ops on the USS Eisenhower in the '80's with a hurricane in the vicinty. We was water logged on top! "Keep you bow to the wind!"
