My father grew up in North Dakota and was chastised by the 1st grade teacher to only speak English which he knew how to do, but at home they normally spoke German and he often reverted back to that. At this point in his life he cannot understand German even though he was raised on it.
My point being in a single generation you can change your heritage, and btw my father doesn't have the slightest hint of a German accent, seriously you could not tell it from any normal person on the street.
Another interesting point is my grandfather was born in South Dakota and though his life they mostly spoke German (great grandfather was from Da Mutherland)
