It's that time of year again. Hurricane season is here and the masses will be buying up all the water, milk, bread, and generators just before a storm hits. Panic buying will clear the shelves in minutes if the stores allow it. Which is why FEMA holds a yearly campaign to get people prepared NOW.

If you have a stocked pantry and water storage then you can focus on preparing for a hard winter. The downed trees can become firewood for you and you can start winterizing your home.

I'm interested to see what people in my area are doing to prep, let me know!

I have a 20lb propane tank for the catalytic heater I've used indoors for years (including a 3-day outage) but am thinking of larger tank for greater duration.
I Know 'you're not supposed to bring propane indoors' but I do ;)

I share your concern. I have 30 20pounders and a 10 pounder. I use an extension hose for heater, thru the bedroom window. In addition, I have 20 one pounders for direct connect to heater and stoves. Bedroom also has CO2 detector. Since I'm in southern AZ, I doubt I'll need it for long cold snap. The worst cold snap was 27 degress F. on Jan. 9, 2009 by me. I always keep my eyes open for 20 pounders being dumped. If push came to shove, I know where to lay my hands on lot of 20 pounders.

I think the house is well set for most storms.

If the winds are 70 mph or more, we'd keep everyone away from windows, especially in whatever direction the wind's blowing. Thank the good Lord we did that for Sandy. You wouldn't believe the way the glass from our circle top window shattered when the pine tree hit it. Afterwards, my sis and I cleaned shards of glass out of the carpet that were everywhere!

We've got the generator, plenty of gas and propane. 4 or 5 Little Buddy heaters stashed away. Lanterns, flashlights, alternative ways to cook. Full pantry, water, lighters, lots of blankets.... After all, we've been at this now (seriously) since Sandy, even a little before that.

If they advise evacuation, we're outta here. The only thing left to do I believe, is switch out the go bags to warmer attire. I should get to that this week.

When winter storms become a possibility, we'll put a shovel, newspaper and some kitty litter in the back of the cars. Also some blankets, hand warmers, etc. Good to go.

I understand what you mean about winter weather and taking care of the car preps, because I lived in IL. Now, living in southern AZ, I just wait 9-10 hours and the snow is gone.

If you're just now preparing for Storm season you're way too late. April to May is when you should be preparing

I'm getting some cold weather gear together as I'll be working outside most days. We insulate the windows with plastic every year and put caulking and spray foam on exterior walls. I'm getting water storage containers and the pantry is full. I also have mil spec sand bags to fill when the town fills the sand boxes.

For hurricane season, here, I recommend a cold beverage and a nice fire. But that's in East Central Missouri. In 2021 I was vacationing in Florida, where I had lived a few years earlier, and a hurricane hit, CAT 1 we slept through it, in our modern Clearwater Beach Hotel. That said I'm stunned that the people in Florida are not as a group more prepared. It's not if it's when.
When I was 17 (1985) I carried a condom in my wallet:oops:

No I never used it, no I don't know what happened to it, but my first born was born in 2002, so it was effective:unsure:
