Honest, serious question: what's the difference between a bug out bag, get home bag, 72 hour bag and a I'm never coming home bag?

I just have a bag with stuff I might need in an emergency. It doesn't know if I'm trying to get home or trying to get away from home.

Generally speaking, the difference is how long you'll be living out of said bag, and it's different for everyone.

BOB: Varies depending on distance to travel, based on terrain and if camping is expected.
GHB: Straight home, no stops, possibly includes intrusion tools to make a path. Minimal food.
72 hour: I've only ever considered these as mission oriented bags that will change depending on patrol or scouting duties. Leaving base, returning in 3 days.
INCH: Everything, including the kitchen sink. Often in a wagon or on its own wheels, not generally something that can be carried.

That's how I see them. All have redundancies with others, but some can be pared down to minimal weight/size. Skill set will determine how much.

You have arrived at a much higher level of understanding, and comprehension of this than most are aware exists. In essence the BOB is a sissy version of an E&E Bag. (E&E = Escape & Evasion)

A well thought out E&E Bag would trump both BOB & GHB, plus it would include realistic things needed, but not considered on prepping forums or books. And eliminate not needed things like toothpaste, and twenty other things.

The bottom line is "IF" preppers would actually practice, they would quickly figure out what they (specifically) need, and what is useless crap they are humping.

I totally disagree. The INCH Bag and the BOB both have clear goals. Easy to perfect. Might take twenty or thirty times redoing it. The GHB bag is a total long shot. You have zero knowledge when creating it about "ANY" of the factors. NONE.
You know with 95% certainty that:
  • You will need water
  • You will need food
  • You will need light
  • You will need some method to stay warm
  • You will need a way to navigate
  • You will need a way to get information (i.e. am/fm radio)
  • You will likely need a way to start a fire
  • You will likely need a good knife
  • You will likely want some cash. . 1, 5 and 10 dollar bills
  • You MAY need some basic supplies like med kit, paracord, binocs, spare socks. hard candy
  • You MAY want a way to recharge your phone (power bank) since not all disasters kill the phones.
  • If legally allowed: You will want a means of defense
See. . . That wasn't so hard.

Thanks for the "schooling", but I don't need that. Perhaps you do.

Anyone have thoughts on the 18w Thunderbolt solar charger from Harbor Freight? I wantEd one for my GHB, and this panel seems like it would just work for charging up my comms or flashlight in a “get home” scenario. I snagged it with a 25% off coupon, so it came down to a reasonable $65.

Could you sew it onto your pack or something? It's cool and all.... but for a GHB, using it means you have to stop and find a safe place to unfold it, then wait....and wait and wait, because it's really low wattage. Stopping to charge devices isn't helping to get you home any faster.
Personally, I think if I bought one I'd stash it in a vehicle or something.

it has grommets and could easily be draped over a pack, attached with caribeeners

I think I’d be charging things like headlamps, arc lighters, radios, etc.

You really are a closed minded individual who thinks that you have all the answers and that your way is the only way. I've been doing this for 30+ years so I tailor my solutions to my needs.

Do whatever the hell you want, but stop bragging to us about how special you are.

EVERYBODY can learn something new. Well, I guess it's everybody EXCEPT YOU.

You just went on my ignore list.

First "THANK YOU" for putting me on your ignore list, I appreciate that.

Second, it is interesting that with 30+ years of serious prepping, you can't grasp that for several reasons someone might not "Need" any of that. If the tables were turned, my first question would have been WHY.

I am "NOT" looking to stir the pot. And this person has me on Ignore. I keep wondering why it is that not needing a Get-Home-Bag is such an upset.

Some people never ever leave home, they may be very old, or infirmed, or disabled, injured, or may just be happy and content to stay home.

In my case, I have no desire to ever leave the security of my sanctuary. In years past, I would go to town once a year for supplies, but I have worked hard to little-by-little eliminate that yucky experience. I do have several BOB's because I live in the center of a seven-million-acre National Forest, and forest fire is a summer risk.

The response you received had nothing to do with your opinion about a GHB not being necessary.
It had everything to do with the sarcasm of your response to their list of factors one can plan for when building a GHB in response to your assertion that such cannot be known.
You claimed "You have zero knowledge when creating it about "ANY" of the factors. NONE."
You received a reply with numerous examples of information you can easily account for when putting a GHB together, but then finished with a quip about the exercise not being that hard.
Your response didn't acknowledge the informative body or the reply, but only met the same level of sarcasm as the end of it.
At that point, you both were set to drive it into the ground, avoiding the actual information pertinent to the topic.

You are free to hold the opinion that GHBs are not useful. But if someone disagrees, and has found a supportable purpose for them, that too is as valid an opinion as yours.
In the end, it's personal preference.

Please read post #64 & #65

In his post #64 He was clearly responding to my post.

In my post #65 I THANKED HIM, and said, that I did not need that. At which point he basically attacked me. (See post #68)

I've read the whole thread.
You were "attacked" because you couldn't help yourself, and included "Perhaps you do" in your reply (#65).
They provided the information in response to your assertion of a lack of knowledge about factors that a GHB could account for. They clearly didn't need schooling on the issue.
The condescension earned the later response(#68), not the difference of opinion on GHBs.

So,,,,,,I am free to attack other members, but I MUST do it in a NON-CONDESCENDING way. If I understand this whole issue, it is about avoiding condescending communications.

No, the lesson is to avoid condescension, thus removing any reason for an aggressive response.
Let's all just try to take things less personal, and stick to discussing the merits of the topic.

This is the main issue IMHO. You repeatedly attempt to argue point irrelevant to the topic. Then get butt hurt when people dont want to hear your opinions.

This thread is (or was) about a portable solar options for a GHB. This wasn’t a debate on the merits of a GHB vs a BOB. If you want to debate the merits of a GHB, then make a thread titled “I think GHB’s are dumb, prove me wrong”. When you come into a thread to argue about stuff not relevant to the OP, it is the very definition of an internet troll. Trolls like to argue, stir the pot, be contrary, and always have to have the last word. Just sounds like you a T.

let’s put this another way, how you’ve behaved in this thread is akin to me going onto a culinary forum, and asking about which butter to use to get the flakiest crusts on my apple pie, and YOU come in and start posting about how you hate apples, and that cherry pie is best. then start arguing with people and turning the conversation into an “apple vs cherry” debate. It rude, arrogant, and unwelcome.. What you’re doing is being a duche. Please stop being a douche.

He's a troll, he has to be the center of attention. It doesn't matter if it's good attention or bad attention he just needs attention. He feeds off attention, if we quit giving him attention he'll go away.

Either we stop feeding the troll or we accept that he runs this forum now and he gets to control any thread he wants too.
