I've abandoned Google and Bing and now use StartPage as my primary search engine.

They are a Dutch company that uses SSL for your searches, and don't record your IP or searches. They don't filter your results and they don't personalize them either. They don't give you a cookie or read your cookies.

Another great feature is that they offer an ixquick proxy link with each search result, and will proxy your connection if you visit the links. They do all this for free. If you value your privacy, it's worth a look.

Thanks. I'll give them a try.
but you do realize, regardless of the NSA, very little is "private"

I have a friend who's a white hat and he's never failed to penetrate a bank. Personally, I know he's 12 for 12 and that was a few years ago.

The only way to be safe from the grid is to stay off the grid period. If they really want to see what your doing they will.....

If you want to try and hide your porn habits from the other half I think thats about all it would be useful for.

Do you know that the ads on these pages are from Google? - my tracker says g.com, publicadsg.com and googleadsg.com are all google ads. If you click on one you are recorded.

This kind of spy stuff is all around us and most of them, like Google, work to defeat our second and fourth amendment rights.

It's a Dutch company, which puts it in the NSAs jurisdiction.

There isn't much privacy anywhere once you connect to an ISP and access the internet. For the most part all that information is used harmlessly, and while large amounts of it are stored, it's used autonomously by programs to determine what ads they need to display. Nothing more, nothing less. As for the information that's intercepted and used for more nefarious purposes, there's next to nothing that can be done about it. No matter how much effort is put forth.

I hardly give it any thought, as I'm comfortable in the fact that I'm far too boring to get any one organizations attention. I know people (family very much included) who think there's someone listening every time they're on the phone. I've tried to ask them what they were talking about that was so interesting, but it doesn't seem to get my point across. :)

I would enjoy nothing more than seeing Google wiped out.

Just to be clear, I don't think anyone here is paranoid as per my example. I'm just elaborating an example in regards to what exactly are you doing that should catch someones attention? If it's just searching about prepping, buying some ammo and looking up survival topics... there's probably nothing to worry about. If it's an effort to protest the collection of information, the best tactic you can use on that front is to support software that lets you determine what information is shared and what isn't. If you think about it, sites can attempt anything they want, it's the programs on your computer that will let them or deny them.

THANKS for the recommends! I've installed the first two Start Page & DucKDuckGo in Firefox and look forward to trying them. But have to wonder, I don't see any adds on them... Their not providing this search service for free... Soooooooooo if their not selling your information or using it for their own marketing... How are they making money?!?

I've been using the Adblock Plus addon recommended by DuckDuckGo for about a year now and LOVE IT! Stops 90% of stupid pop up adds and more. Thumbs up!

Gmail belongs to Google - if they aren't selling your data you are one in seven billion. They also allow the FBI and NSA to have copies of your information without a warrant.

The first few results are "Ads related to (search term)"

I found it interesting that Startpage says, "enhanced by google". Details say no, maybe I'm cynical.
Yeah, they use google and several other search engines to get the results. This isn't the same as going to google yourself though. When you visit a site, your browser passes in a lot of metadata, like your IP, what browser you're using, your region, etc, etc. When you do a search on StartPage, they don't record this data, and they connect with google to do the search for you. The only information passed to google is StartPage's metadata, not your own.

I use Ixquick. But since I have already admitted I have a pressure canner and know how to use it, I am sure I am on several lists.

Hey NSA - it's me again.
