So I do have some machining and tooling background. I keep making stuff as I need it and can't find replacemt parts.

If I find an inexpensive garand I might go that route then :) though the time might be an issue...
A serviceable Garand now will most likely set you back $1,000.

Measure out 900 to a 1,000 yards. Hand a man size target. Go back to zero yard line. Look at it. Then think again about putting small groups at 900 yards with iron. This rifle will out shoot any M14 or m1 and will shoot over 1,600 yards. At 100-200 yards it shoots holes in holes and has done so at much more if you do your part.
But even with the scope and training . To shoot 3 inch groups. at 900 yards is going to require you to have a good day. zero to 900 yards a lot of things happen to a bullet . Legends have a way of growing over time.

Everything is situational in my book. To begin with I'm not leaving home unless its destroyed, there is some environmental factor that makes live very very difficult to unsustainable, or the threat level makes leaving preferable to staying. Then I have to figure if this is a temporary move or if I'm not returning ever. Then I have to figure my mode of transportation, if all goes according to plan and I have a vehicle I'm taking most of what I have if not everything with me. If I'm leaving on foot my long arm depends on how far I'm walking and the current threat level but I'm thinking its most likely going to be a .22 rifle or a 12 gauge shotgun backed by a 9mm pistol.

Around here you can't get 500+ yards to shoot, trees are everywhere, 7.62 NATO and 30/06 are all that is needed to do the job.

Sometimes you will need to go through a tree to get the target.

I have googled the aerial view of this place, can't see it, only half of the 6 car parking lot is shown and fragment of the dirt road.

You are lucky to live in an open area which is ideal for LR, get them before they can even see you.

With COV 19 carp and all that is going on some fun stuff on hold. I really want to put the 338 Lapua to the test at sons place. I really want to try 2,000 yards. Weapon can do it with ease. But shooting over two ridges and all that goes into it will not be easy.
It has been many years but as a M60 gunner I remember front sight post covered a man at 800 yards. You aimed low brought shots up into target as it was covered by sight post.
This beast will shoot holes in holes and make it look easy. Of course with any weapon as you pass 500 yards things get harder. Never seen it done. No place to ever try it but "they" claim 2.5 miles.

If we had to bolt I'd take 4 long guns one for each of us.

Ruger
10/22
30.06
Mini-14

Not a rifle but
Beretta over under 12ga.

Can cover most of our needs with them, can find ammo and have the most ammo for them. Don't need any special tools for any of them either.

Side arms are a given.

My wife doesn't know much of what I did in the service and nor does many others besides that my first MOS was 11B. Anywho one thing to tell the wife how far you can shoot which I only hinted, so one day I set a target up and with open sights and a range finder for her, took her to furthest hill across BLM land across longest part of our property and said watch this, 900+ meters with open sights K31 GP-11 military rounds plinking all 6 in 3 inch grouping. You could see the cold bore shot from the rest but not by much.
Rifle has original soldiers name it was issued to in the buttstock all matching numbers from 1938.
Guinness world record for the rifle is one mile open sights on a target, not consistent but can be had once one walks the rounds on target with a spotter.
You should do this again first thing in the morning while having someone video it.... post it here afterwards cause I would really like to see it! :vs_whistle:

AR10 you can have it in a lot of calibers. 308 very common 6.5 creedmoore also. Still small enough to move in close spaces, light enough to carry all day. Semi auto will put rounds out plenty fast or slow as you see fit. Rugged simple weapon. Lot of interchangeable part with others. Shoot it Iron or mount any optics you want Not as many as an AR15. If you need to move it is unlikely you will be carry more than one of any rifle. And ammo. Not a bad option if 5.56 just not your thing.

funny that my most trusted rifle is my remington 7600 in 30-06.. but if had to flee from my look-out spot, with the long-range set-up, I would leave the AR-10 with the bull barrel take the AR-10-308, 870 and ruger 10/22..

To answer the last one: why carry an ar15 And a 22 conversion kit rather then an ar15 and a 22? I'd probably not be saving much weight with one rifle while carrying w gives me the ability to hand the 22 to someone for backup.

Now for the biggie ar-10 vs m1a... I can see some benefits of building out an ar10 in 308 over buying an m1a - rough guesstimate puts an ar10 at about half price if I do some careful shopping. The upside here could be that I might be able to get the how's 1500 mags and the ar-10 mags to interchange ? Need to look into that as that would definitely be a major plus.

I'm English so what the hell do I know about firearms, I don't own any guns but out of curiosity what if the bad guys come at you guys at night; are there night scopes available for your rifles?
I know hand-held NV scopes are on sale to the public for watching animals and stuff, I bought myself this Hawke model for £200 (269 US dollars) a few years ago-

If enemies come at me in the dark, I plan to immediately warn them that I know Eyeball aka Old spike, and that he will be along directly to bore them to death with his inanity....

I guess I'm the odd man out after reading a few pages of this thread. I would grab one of my AR-15s, hands down. They are light, accurate out to at least 400yds ( I've shot them to 600 on target but that was a match gun) and ammo is fairly compact and widely available. All of my ARs are highly reliable and can easily go 1000 rounds before needing to be broke down and cleaned.

I have a choice of calibers. 5.56 and 300BLK currently but it is so easy to add new calibers that I'll have more as money allows.

I had to go back and read the OP to see what the actual premise of the thread was. Yes, sudden SHTF and I am running out the door on foot and can only take one rifle, it would be an AR (if not for that pesky old boat accident). Hands down. Light, capable, availability of ammo and parts in the field, and number of rounds to be carried make it an easy choice.
