My grandmother did this. She would get a mayo jar or old pickle jar and reuse these for canning. Seems kinda dangerous to me, but no one in my family got sick from it. Does this type of practice still go on and what are your thoughts about it?

I use these jars for storing things that I want to store in smaller amounts, but not for canning. I use the gallon pickle jars to store some beans that I don't need a lot of. I put whatever I am going to store in them and throw in an oxygen absorber and it should be good for a long time.
Using old lids for canning can be dangerous because, the sealant on them may not create a good seal if used twice.

Great idea. I guess my grandmother didn't know anything about oxygen absorbers back then. I agree with you on trying to reuse something twice, very dangerous. I'll rinse these out now and store stuff like rice, beans, pasta in them instead of trying to can with them. Thank you!!!!
