How accurate and how inexpensive? You can make your own but it has to be calibrated from a "known source".

There are dozens of models on Ebay. If you see one that's interesting and in your price range copy it's model number and search on youtube for it. There's bunches of people on there giving surprisingly good and educational reviews!

ON THE RADIATION TOPIC... Anybody here well versed in the matter? and the current leak issues going on with Fukushima?!? BBC News - Fukushima leak is 'much worse than we were led to believe'

I'd be sweating this issue much more were I on the West coast. And A WHOLE LOT MORE if I were near Hawaii! THOSE people are bound to get HOSED because of this. :(

To varying degrees it's bound to effect us all though.

I have some old units but I really don't trust them and since you brought it up I think I need to up date my units. I did find this at Amazon a cheap dosimeter that would tell how much radiation you received.

The most important things necessary in surviving a nuclear blast is knowledge and a way to detect radiation level.
If you can stay in a safe area for 48 hours the radiation level could drop by as much a 99%.

The radiation levels near the site are way above acceptable limits but there is a lot of water between there and here. The levels in the waters off our shore are not higher than normal right now and that is well below the acceptable limit. We didn't get much airborne radiation because of the distance between the event and our shores - the same will be true for the water.
