With all the severe weather, tornados, flooding... how do you prep for something like that? if you havean underground spot then possible flooding rain, how could you prepare an underground space while being able to keep it from filling with water during floods. do you put yer preps down there? or to build an underground storm shelter on your bol.

how would you beable to do something like this that meets both extremes? and on a modest budget?

An underground bunker can be made nearly water-proof but you still need a way in and out. Storm shelters are usually built under the home or garage and sealed on the outside. The entrance is almost always on the top - like a tilt up roof. The shelter itself has a drain field around the bottom to shed excess water away from the exterior.

If you need to build it more "in the open" or you don't have a garage then you look for a high spot and build it into that.

I don't know what "a modest" budget is but price some concrete building blocks, 2x4 lumber, heavy sealant for painting on concrete, and some OSB. Plan out how big you need - then increase the size by 50%. You can build it a little at a time and do a decent job of protecting yourself.

Living in tornado alley, all I can do is my best. That may not be good enough but what the hell. I can have no basement. The ground here is solid rock just below the surface. The best I can hope for is a by-pass (which has happened on more than a few occasions) or maybe partial damage. If my house is destroyed then I'm SOL. I'll be happy if I can find my safe. My strong belief is that God is watching out for us and we will be okay. God did say he watches over his family.

Where we are, most of the houses have basements - not because of tornados, but because the frost line is about 48 inches in the winter. We could not afford to heat the house without a basement.

During tornado season, we just go downstairs and go towards the wall that is closest to the direction the tornado is coming from. In our case, that is usually the SW corner. Our food and medical preps are down there too. The medical is all in watertight plastic bins up on the top of a shelf (because it is light). The food is mostly in #10 cans or 5 gallon buckets with gamma lids. I did put some 2x4's down on the floor and we set the buckets and cans on them to keep it away from any seepage. But we really do not have a problem with flooding unless I fail to keep the sump clear.

Im thinking if i can find a way to manage and prepare for variables then i can run out of excuses and get going. I then will need a spot with mountains or psuedo maountains to keep me happy and busy.

have you seen or heard of underground sheltering for say like a horse a coupla goats (cause they are freaking cute...& yummy) wouldnt that be wild!!! i ownder what these big asses ranches and barns do...

I'm thinkin about the NE area near the Ouachita Mountains just south of the OK border. I'm wondering if things grow better there than the DFW area AND if basements are possible there.

Oh, and we need more conservative voters here. I recently read an article from CA stating people should move to TX for jobs. Just what we need, people wanting to turn this place into a blue state.

The average in ground storm shelter runs on average between 2K and 4K, with the option to get much more expensive if you want it to. The shelters that go into the garage floor start about 4K.
