Hey fella’s, my names Brent. Iv been having people come into my work lately telling me about the importance of staying ready for disasters of any kind. Wasn’t sure where to start gathering information from until I found this forum. I would appreciate any basic advice. (Mabye what kind of items I should have, self defense, alternative currency ect.)

Thank you! Do you have any tips for a newbie like myself? Appreciate the welcome.
Sorry to inform you that you are the "Classic" blind being led by the also blind. The whole prepping movement has been corrupted. Nearly everyone giving you advise, is also inadvertently corrupted, SADLY. I do wish you good luck in your quest.

Great point. When the blind lead the blind they both fall in the ditch..
Now some smart old sage said in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.

Sounds great, but there is flawed prepping theory, and there is proved, well established, prepping theory, Based on "FIRSTHAND BOOTS in the FIELD" experience.

Choose wisely.
What channels do you watch personally? Thanks for the response!

I try to stay away from “doom-toobers”. These are folks who post click bait shock stories about impending doom and apocalypse. Ya, if you listen to these people for entertainment, fine.. However, if you take these people seriously, they’d have you cashing in your investments and retirement and buying tons of preps.. if the SHTF, this will seem like a genius move, but if it doesn’t, then you’re screwed…

Maybe 50/50 or 60/40 would work. Just remember Food and Water are also investments, especially if you have five years of both. Also, investments you don't live-in or farm or ranch are in the end just illusions. You may get a monthly statement; it may even be eatable with catchup.

My Spidey senses are tingling.

If you worked in a retail store (Hunting, Fishing, Firearms, Camping store) or a supermarket, for example, I could see your scenario of having people talking about the importance of staying ready for disasters. What sort of work do you do? & what state do you reside in? Knowing the state one can explore the types of SHTF scenarios.

I should also point out that there are 'Preppers', Doomsdayers", & Survivalists. They have some common denominators, but they start to drastically differ on numerous concepts.

I am neither a prepper nor a doomsdayer, so you know where I am coming from. What I am so called "preparing" for is for what I have already endured: Earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, tyrannical downpours, flooding, fires, & civil unrest. Each experience I learned something, & found out that I was extremely prepared in some areas, but these experiences showed me where I was either lacking in gear, knowledge, or "practice" as in not being as familiar with "something" whether it was a tool, or a feature of a piece of gear, that could have made life much easier during that SHTF event.

SO in short, I am trying to make it so that the next disaster easier to cope & deal with, and somehow keep the sense of "luxury" present

Oh, and Hello from NY.

Hearty welcome from DFW, Texas. From what I can gaher a person needs water..food..and ammo and in that order. Now a nice lady who used to hang on here named Toronto Girl survived the collapse of the USSR in the Ukraine as a Tenny Bopper said the hot barter items are cigarettes. Vodka and toliet paper. So it might be good to stock those items too
Basically, just to be in good shape temporally and spiritually during increasingly difficult times. I know that's vague, but it's not possible to know exactly what the future holds. In past generations putting back necessary supplies and being a good Christian was an acceptable way of life. That's what I try to do.
im a full fledged Christian, encounter the Holy Spirit regularly type of Christian. Casting devils out of houses type of Christian hahaha!! My faith gets me through everything. As far as the physical aspect, I am a kickboxing coach for a well known academy. Check those box’s, I just don’t have to much of a clue on what to do exactly if some type of natural or man made disaster happens to occur. That’s why I sought all you guys out. I deffinitly want to be prepared for anything.. war, famine ect.

Corrupted in what way exactly? This information is important IF it’s true.

It is true. Would take many pages to answer that inquire. Suggest you study this.

Corrupted in what way exactly?
Roughly, very-very roughly around the late 70's to mid 80's it was corrupted, and where-as nearly all current preppers have derived their knowledge reference prepping in the last forty years, this is a problem. They are steadfast in denial, and fight to sedate themselves, that modern/current prepping theory is good enough.

Try to be more specific, could you?
What theory are you referring to?

I prep with the same mindset that my grandfather spoke about concerning his life during the depression. You gonna tell me that's some new-fangled modern theory that's corrupting the good people of today?

It does not work to explain it. A fish is immersed in a reality of water, it knows no other reality. Regardless of how old a person is if their study of prepping originated in the last 45 years, that is the prepping reality they are immersed in. And they will defend it to their death. There is some "slight" chance the original poster of this thread could escape from modern prepping theory, as I gathered, they were not immersed into it yet.
That's awfully cryptic, @Sourdough.

Ah, the "No true Scotsman" fallacy...
If it's not what you think is correct, then it's incorrect, but you can't articulate what makes it incorrect.

You're just BORING. You can't engage in intelligent discussion, so you smart off.

Bud, I've tried to engage twice now.
You refuse to specifically outline what it is you're addressing.

Stop using vague terms, use all the space you need, and just say what you think is important to say.
We can't meaningfully engage with whimsy.

WHAT, is vague about discussing the distinction between Old School Prepping Theory vs. New School Prepping Theory.

Let's start with a proper definition of those two terms.
