4" wide, 1 ft long pcs of 3/4" plywood, with a 4" nail driven thru the wood every square inch. rig a means to hold them on the soles of your shoes. You have to carefully raise and lower your feet, so that they nails don't "tear up" a lot of dirt, but they work great in sand and on grass, leaving no trace of your passage at all. Keep them for use within 100 ft or so of your dugout. Emerge only at night, and only to get water and dispose of wastes, for a year after shtf. By then, things will have calmed down a lot and a lot of the disease risk will be gone.

They work great in sand? Kind of like the rakes Zen Buddhist use to make patterns in their sand/rock gardens? By the way, living underground exposes one to disease causing mold.

Alternatively, if you are planing on living in a fixed location then plan on placing some inconspicuous stepping stones or taking advantage of a street or side walk as hard surfaces do a pretty good job of hiding footprints.
