With the talk about ham radio I had electronics on my mind. I thought about building a small battery powered amplifier then figured out that there should be some already available. There are. Check Google for "Spy Amplifier" and you can get a tiny one for $5. This might come in handy and wouldn't take up much room in your bag.

I built a small guitar amp a couple years ago called the Tiny Giant. Great little amp and loud for its size. You get the circuit board and all the parts so if you're handy with a soldering iron go for it. 20 bucks from Texas. I think with all the switches and knobs and so forth I had about 32 or 34 bucks in it. Loud enough to play small venues. If you're talking about an amp for your radio, I have never built one of those.

I was talking about an audio amp, with earphones to amplify ambient sounds. Like a hearing aid on steroids. Could help inform you of someone sneaking up on you. Or... listening to the zombies moan.
FYI there really is no such thing as being paranoid. It's just good thinking when the world is out to get you.

Good active shooter's headsets can work well for this.
We've got several pair of the Howard Leight Impact headsets... you can crank the gain way up and hear people whispering 10 yards away and still protect your hearing should you need to discharge a firearm.
Stereo imaging is pretty good as well, so you can maintain some idea of where stuff is.
Also works well if someone breaks into your house and you don't have a suppressed HD weapon.

I second whatn whoppo said.
If you buy a pair of decent elec earmuffs, they double as a sound amplifier too.
Hunting is so much easier with them on!

I'm deaf so I have a cochlear implant....I can crank it up to hear a gnat fart at 40 paces but the cool thing is I can build a salad bowl reflector....use the external mic that came with it and hear the same gnat fart at a mile...you can go to the point that you cant stand to listen very long...a leaf rustling in the wind at 20 yards can sound like someone beating on an anvil next to your ear with a ball peen hammer! I use rechargables batteries and a solar panel to get a charge when I'm not using a USB charger or disposable batteries.

The great thing about being deaf is....If you want total quiet you can have it anytime....Even on the 50 yard line during the superbowl!
