What do you guys think about learning a new language as a prepping strategy ? Do you think its an asset? Do you view prepping as multi -dimensional or are you more gear-centric?

When I want the little ******** who do work around my place to know something, I just speak real loud and slow and point.
When I want the little muslime's at the convenience store to think that I know their language, I just point two fingers to my eyes and ears then rotate my hand such that the fingers are then pointing to them..The international symbol for I'm watching you goathumper and I speak whatever gibberish you do, so don't try anything.

Absolutely. i speak a little German and understand a little Spanish.
I'm still trying to get my head wrapped around liberal speak, which IS in English.
Knowing a second language would be handy, however I believe English is the language of the US and that it is far more important that the non English speaking types who immigrate to the US learn to speak English. Not the other way around.

I tend to the theory that your survival and prosperity, if possible, are more related to your skills and mindset than the amount of gear you have. The ammo will, eventually run out, as will the stored food. You should have the skills to grow more, hunt without ammo, etc.
I did take a foreign language -Spanish, didn't think french would help me all that much in the US. No, it hasn't made me any money, but it does help when you need to communicate. I work in construction and oh-10-25% of the workers speak no English, or very little anyway.
When people don't know what you're saying you tend to -criticize or say something you might not otherwise say. I was at a family party and there were some of the farm workers there talking, my kids' friend asked me if I spoke Spanish and I said "un poco" ( a little). It got real quiet after that.
So, yes I think it's a valuable skill, it makes people feel a little at ease if they don't speak English. Conjugating verbs-past present tense is hard. Try starting with some important nouns.

Learning another language is helpful to a point.
People were supposed to learn this countries language, not the other way around.
If they can't communicate with me or others, tough shit.
If the SHTF, I would consider anyone who cannot communicate with me in my native language, ENGLISH, most likely an enemy.
Would use the language barrier a gage to judge those who had no interest in becoming an American Citizen, therefore no consideration extended.
Multi culturelist are not our friends, they are the bane of our country and most likely they are not for our country either.
Statistically, I will never run out of ammo or food.,

Out of curiosity, the USA does not have an official second language does it?
Everything - and I mean everything up here in Canada (even out here in the West) has both French and English instructions on every single product we produce for Canadians.
It's the law.
Every student in grade nine is forced to take French, and out of three sons, one went to a French Immersion for his entire schooling and is fluent in French. My other two sons were not interested in learning French, and so are not versed in it.
Learning the language does help in the here and now with Gov. jobs up here, but I do not know how relative it would be when the SHTF - cause I have no plans to visit Quebec when that happens.

You can learn this French saying - "les mains en l'air" which translates into "Hands Up".....lol

I am with Chipper on this one. Even though I speak German and understand and speak a little Spanish, I don't believe in a SHTF scenario that reaching out to the illegals that contributed to this great Nations demise will be on my Buddy list. Just because they were given a run on freebies from our Gov, doesn't mean my stuff is negotiable. Not under my watch this time.
