Lanterns

Hi All,

Just found a major flaw in my lighting preps. Had a bit of a heat wave last week along with a power outage.

Current backup lighting set up consists of oil and gas lanterns which under the circumstances threw off too much heat. Ideal for cooler weather but not when it is sweltering.
Have lots of flashlights but am looking for either solar or battery powered lanterns. Lots of choice out there but don't want to buy any garbage

Any recommendations?

We have a supply of these Streamlight lanterns. Different sizes all around the house and basement. Use a small clip for our belt loops for hands free light.

Probably not really what you're looking for, but I gotta mention them since they're on sale. https://www.rei.com/product/124869/mpowerd-luci-inflatable-solar-lantern-outdoor-20 I have a bunch of them (really like the multi-colored ones, but they're not on sale :( )

  • High-efficiency solar panel offers a full charge in 7 hrs. in direct sunlight
  • 2-second quick shutoff
  • Collapses down to just 1 in. thick, giving you plenty of room for all your other gear

I bought a 4-pack of the Tansoren solar lanterns last year and have been very happy with them. Charge quickly, are super bright, and no failures yet. And they're pretty inexpensive, too; under $40 for all four of them. We keep 'em on a window sill so their always charged and ready to go. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H7DP19Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My daughters work had a Safety meeting and handed out (I know they're cheap but for free I can't complain) Cascade Mountain Tech lanterns, after the meeting they had a extra case left over and gave her 6 of the lanterns, I ended up with 4 of them and thought they'ed be OK for closet lights...surprised that they were fairly decent and the last power outage they proved their worth, they won't replace the gas/propane lanterns but when it's hot they're good enough until I start the generator.

I had a Bushnell I loved it, but if I may ask if you're in a particular brand for power tools? Milwaukee makes a fantastic area lights, it's a more expensive platform to get into vs Ryobi and I would probably recommend Ryobi to anyone not going to use them every day, but you can get into some pretty serious stuff off of battery power tool batteries. I have a few lighting options by Milwaukee, the lantern I keep with a 8A.H in the closet, our bedroom is 20x26 and it will light it up no problem. You won't be operating by it across the room but you can get a gun together if need be. I feel that battery platforms aren't considered enough, Milwaukee offers up to a 12A.H and bigger ( much more expensive batteries) for bigger tools like breaker hammers and a tower light, friend of mine has 4 tower lights and it's mind-blowing that they're run off of a battery.

Don't really have many power tools that run off of batteries. Although I do have a Dewalt power station I picked up years back. Maybe i'll look into any accessories for that.

Godspeed.

Hiya Cap,

Well I happen to be a Freelance outdoor gear reviewer, and it just so happens one of those gear comparisons was for LED Lanterns.

The one that outperformed and lasted over all the others was the Rayovac Indestructible Lantern DIY#DLN-BC

In the end I ended up buying 1 of those for myself, on top of the one I was given to review. Last year after reading my review, lol my father bought one too. I highly suggest leaning towards this one vs a rechargeable one.

Cool, I'll check them out.

Harbor Freight has these for sale for $5 bucks each.. Found one that was solar rechargeable for the truck.

We've used these several times and they do put out a good bit of light

I use an atomic beam lantern for all my baja fishing trips.
I've had it for five years or so, and it has been through a lot and still in fine shape.
Uses three AAA batteries, has a magnetic bottom which comes in handy,
and can go from a sliver of light to ultra brightness.

Under a summer baja evening, the last thing you want is a heat lamp next to you.

IRRC, I picked it up for $25, and worth every penny.

Off grid 9 years tried THEM ALL.
The best out there by FAR is the one created on the budget light forum and manufactured by Sofirm.
The BLF-LT1
Runs on 4 x 18650's and will run for a week. Can change color temp from cool to N to warm. Has a sleep timer. Has self charger. Runs on Anduril 2 software and can be programmed to YOUR liking. Just the best by far. None of the others compete. I have 5 of them.
