"Israel has carried out an air strike targeting a consignment of missiles in Syria bound for Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon, an Israeli official said on Saturday.

The Jewish state had long made clear it is prepared to use force to prevent advanced weapons reaching Lebanon's powerful Shi'ite Muslim guerrillas from Syria. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Hezbollah are allied to Iran, Israel's arch-enemy.

With Assad battling a more than two-year-old Syrian insurgency, the Israelis also worry that the Sunni Islamist rebels could loot his arsenals and eventually hit the Jewish state, ending four decades of relative cross-border calm.

Lacking a side to support in its northern neighbor's civil war, and worried about inadvertently fuelling escalation, Israel has exercised restraint. Its government did not formally confirm Friday's air strike, which was disclosed to Reuters by an Israeli official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"There was an air strike. The target was not a chemical weapons facility. It was missiles intended for Hezbollah," the official told Reuters." - Yahoo! News Canada - Latest News & Headlines

Why would Syria ship missiles to Hezbollah? To get the US and the rest of the world focused on Israel instead of Syria. This would give Assad a freer hand to deal with the insurgency without scrutiny condemnation and eventual intervention(arms advisors etc) from the outside. It would also serve to focus those Arab countries that are assisting the insurgency to form a united front against Israel to Assad's benefit.

There are plenty of reasons. Money, door the Palestinians pay for their arms. Influence, it's quite possible the Hezbo's may have influence with some of those who oppose Assad and if not they might provide Assad men in return. Remember Assad needs to hire mercenaries to really fight his resistance for his military doesn't want to go out and kill their brothers and other family members. And finally yeah, he wants the world focused on a Hezbo/Israel conflict. In the 1980's we got the world to stop fretting "death squads" in El Salvador by instead focusing on a revolution in Nicaraugua. The added benefit of supplying the Nic revolution was it stopped Nic's communist govt from arming communist insurgents in El Salvador. If not for Iran / Contra it was a plan one could say truly worked!

I do not believe that Syria is sending weapons from their own cache to Hezbollah. I believe it is Iran shipping weapons to Hezbollah through Syria. Most likely, Iran made that a condition for supporting the Assad government.

You've got to admire the clear-thinking Israelis for their "Mad Dog" policy, unlike our own waffling indecisive western politicians..:)

Israeli military strategist Martin van Creveld said as long ago as 2003-
"We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome.
Most European capitals are targets for our air force.
Let me quote General Moshe Dayan: 'Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother"
Our armed forces, however, are not the thirtieth strongest in the world, but rather the second or third.
We have the capability to take the world down with us, and I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under"
