Better be some venting in winter also. Happy chickens lay eggs , unhappy chickens don't. Chickens need sun light. They need security . They like an area to roost. If you can allow them to free range they will do much better. If you keep them penned for a while you can allow them out and around sun down they will go right back in on their own.
If you want they make low energy heat pads just like you use for Dogs and Cats that work very well in their boxes.
IMO Chickens are one of your best food source investments.

Selecting the breed of Chickens that best fits your environment and needs is also important A mix of breeds will ensure a more predictable production. Set it up right and you invest very little time a week for the huge returns.
I need a Chickens crossing sign for the driveway now

Meet Chipmunk she lays large light brown eggs, often two a day. She is also very friendly.

We get to -20 here and I do not heat or insulate my coop. My rule of thumb is Chickens can be wet or cold, not both. My coop has an open mesh bottom and barn wood siding -- plenty of ventilation and wind break, but no warmth. My chickens do fine outside of a little frostbite on their combs. Most of the winter time I don't let them out since there is nothing for them to do outside. During the summer they are out every day and forage for their own food.

You'll get very amazing eggs from forage fed chickens.

Thanks..very informative. Making me hungry for some country eggs with the real orange yellows and which stand up nice in the skillet. I still like ducks since they will eat anything and being cold and wet dont seem to bother them much. Now chicken eggs are better for everyday eating purposes. Duck eggs are pretty rich.
