Hey everyone. I just picked up the SOG Seal Pup. It is a great knife to have in your BOB or EDC. It did cost 50 bucks. But one thing you do not want to go cheap on is a knife. Having a good knife can be the difference between life or death. Just thought I'd post this for anyone thinking of getting it. It is an awesome knife

If you want a blade that is tough and will hold an edge well I would suggest that you get a Damascus blank and finish it with a handle of your own making. They are available from less than $20 US and usually come heat treated and tempered. If you want to you can do this process again (if you know what you are doing) and be completely sure that the finished knife will be a long lived addition to your pack. While prefer to make my own blades from tool steel and files (combined in the folding process) and folded at least 20 times (giving you over a million layers), you can buy blanks of similar quality and save yourself the costs of the forge and the time it takes to actually make the knife.

The 440 stainless jungle knife is the one you will be "junking around with" I hope.
You will find it won't hold an edge as well as a common carbon steel blade and will tend to clog stones. I would suggest getting some "Comet" cleanser or other bleaching scouring powder and ceramic stones just for the stainless knife. Use the Comet to clean the stones after you sharpen the knife. Get a ceramic rod to keep the edge honed between sharpenings.
The KA-BAR needs no special considerations other than keep away from chlorine - even in salt - and to use it wisely.

I just bought a half dozen Wahoo Killer knives from budk, about $18 with shipping. Looks like a Mora, but stainless we will see how they look Saturday. Definitely cheap enough if they will hold a decent edge. I will throw them in some glove boxes and bags.
EDIT: You get what you pay for, they look like a $2 knife to me. Too thick to do any fileting, looks like the edge was done free hand on a bench grinder. I will spend a little time on them with a stone and see if they will sharpen or hold an edge.

Realizing the OP started this thread in April, I've been watching the Seal pups on ebay for a couple of months.
You can get 'em everyday now for $36 shipped, that's a really good deal.
This ole cheap skate on the other hand, watched and waited and hesitated until a used one popped up, and I snagged it for $25, shipped.
It's a good size and I like the grip a lot but, I don't know if I can get used to how light weight it is compared to my other knives. We'll see.

I have kabar knives and machetes and my edc is a Smith and Wesson m&p folder, the only thing I dont like about sog is it is made in Taiwan and have broke quite a few doing daily assignments so I lean towards kabar more now a days
And folks... it's not made to be a pry bar.
Isn't your S&W M&P folder made in China?
