You've decided to bug in. It's just you and a couple others. 1 is elderly. All are fast asleep. It's 2am. Dogs are barking. Going NUTZ. You look out and see somebody/small group of people setting up camp.

You don't recognize them off hand, but they were here earlier scouting the place out. They've found that the small piece of land across the street from you (still your property. Does it matter post SHTF?) will suit them perfect.

Do you go unarmed and ask them to leave? After all, it's only a couple people.....

Do you wake someone up? Do you call for backup?

Do you go armed ready to tell them to gtfo?

You get to them, and you were right. Just a woman and what could be her youngish son. Just looking for a warm/safe place to stay for the night.

So now your presence is known. Still act a tough guy or?

What if instead of it being her young son, it was an older guy. Boyfriend maybe or some guy she met along the way?

So you finally notice that you know them from the previous morning. You were hiding, not exposing where you were, and they eventually left. You thought they left for good, but they're back. But yesterday morning, they were alone. You can see for about a 1/4 mile from where they came and there was no one hiding.

So knowing that they are most likely alone, what next?

Invite them in? Tell them to gtfo?

Lets hear your "solutions." Then I'll tell you the true story that inspired this scenario and what the outcome was :)

I would put on my clown suit and scare the shit out of them. Just kidding. (For those who don't get this see KevinCali's avatar.)

Wake up the others and check the perimeter of your land to make sure it is not an ambush. After the perimeter is secure, confront them and interrogate them while others in my group continue to look for ambush. They may have info or they may just be roaming. She may be a doctor or a crack head. Doctor gets to stay crackhead goes. Maybe they go with a bottle of water or a can of food. Maybe they go with a lead sandwich.

My property is still my property, that doesn't mean I'll play the tough guy. If you're just a couple people another hand at dishes is nice, especially with elders around.

I would spy on them for a few days, inquire what their plans were , inform them of the property line.......

It's going to be a tough call, . . . just like where I live, . . . stray cats and dogs constantly appearing / disappearing, . . . can't feed them all, . . . can't take them all in.

These folks would be the same. Depending upon her (and the kid) demeanor, . . . she could become an assest, . . . the kid too, . . . so, yes, I might take them in.

I also might just ignore them, . . . again their attitude will determine that.

I will also be seriously looking for her lurker boyfriend / husband / SO that may not have been there the first time we met. Few women I know would strike out on their own.

May God bless,
Dwight

Wake everyone up to provide security, arm yourself and go talk to the women. IF you have the supplies and IF you think that she would be a welcome addition to your group, invite her and her companion to join you. IF you suspect that she may be flaky, tell her to move on and to never come back. If she refuses either overpower them and escort them out of the area, or shoot them. It would be a big mistake to let a couple bottom feeders to move onto your property and live across the street from you. You will have to decide. They could be a great benefit to your group or a total disaster. I would not hide in my house hoping that someday they would just move on. I think that they would know pretty quickly that you were there.

Obviously they know you're there, since the dogs are going nuts.
Why haven't they checked you out a little closer? Are they afraid of what you might do to them if they approach you?
Or are they waiting for you to approach them, either to ask for your help or to ambush you?
What about the area behind your house? Could some of her "friends" be set up back there? Or on your flank?
A lot to think about.

Someone on guard duty is in for a tail kicking . Any conversation would be taking place a lot farther for living areas.

I go out unarmed, but with back up 20 yards back - armed back up.

I survey. I assess. If they are no threat and transient - they can stay 12 hours and then it will become hostile.
At 6 hours I visit with some canned goods and make conversation - Friendly interrogation.
After 12 they have to go.

If have manpower to keep 2 people on guard through night, do so. One watching them, the other watching rest of house.
In morning, do sweep.
After sweep, get everybody on alert.
Somebody setup to snipe, but not itchy trigger finger type.
Go armed to meet them. Be polite. Inform them they are trespassing. Find out what they are doing. If alone and non-threatening, and you would like to allow them to stay, let them stay out there for a couple days before bringing in. That way if it's a setup, they aren't on the inside. Watch them like hawks during that time.
If you have no intention of allowing them in your camp, offer them to stay where they are for a day, but they must leave after that.

Be prepared, but be polite.

This sounds like one of those scenarios where you run into to someone ass deep in the woods with no cell signal and the police are at least 45 minutes away on a good day, then the person you just came across skips all of the pleasantries like "hello" and "hows the weather" and skips right to the 64 thousand dollar question, "hey, you got any guns with you?" I hate that.

2 am?
I'd post a watch with instructions to wake everyone immediately if something happens, I'd hope to be able to scout around and make sure they are not part of a larger group that's moved up and is hiding. I leave them be until day light.

In the morning if no other groups were present and it appeared that things hadn't changed over night I'd want to talk to them together and separately with out the other present. I would go to where they are camped and not invite them in. I would be armed though not an open display and I would have my backside covered as well as all other approaches.

Talking to these people presents risk to the group and yet may benefit the group with additional members.

it's 2am...
I would expect camp to be woken up, with a quick someone is setting up camp close by

but 2 am it's a tactical nightmare for any group facing a unknown size, you see 2 but is there 3, 4?? or 20???

I would wait to dawn

approach armed but friendly (no point getting anyone on the defensive and creating a hostile situation)

sit down with the "possible hostile" group and access intent... may be just "innocents" trying to survive

I'm big on numbers, so I would allow the group to keep their camp if no hostility was shown to me, and even trade.... and possibly get to know them a little better

if proven to be trustworthy and a asset would invite them to my camp, as I said I'm big on numbers, and 2-3 people added to my group will increase defensive ability, and make lighter work of harder tasks

Watch them for the night staying out of sight. Don't let my presence be known. Stay covert. Post others to watch our six to make sure this isn't an ambush. Wait till morning to see if they move on, still staying under cover making sure not to let my presence known. If they don't leave by nightfall take care of the problem.

Ok so I'll reveal the story/scenario. It happened to me.

One morning (8-9-10am) a car had been parked in front of various houses on this end of the street. No biggie, I thought it was for my end neighbor. When he got home, I noticed the lady ( just saw the lady) was still in her car. Went to his house and asked if the car was for them, no it wasn't. The car then left before I could walk over and inquire.

Next night/morning. 2am and dogs are going nuts. I look out and the car is there again. I see my neighbors light turn on so I call him. No answer. Im a bit worried. So I get my personal protection equipment on and head over there. I'm on my grammas property when the cops roll up, so being armed, I stay on her property and watch everything transpire.

I did not get a chance to "investigate" which is why I asked what would "YOU" do. Not sure what I would have done. Let them know I know they were there before? Tell them that they have to leave?

Their car was parked in front of an abandoned house the next day. They were on my neighbors (about 4 houses down) property before and after that.

My thought were:
Casing the joints
Smoking herbage or something else
Pro and her John
Mother and son escape bad environment

But then realized it was a good SHTF scenario. Here I am, hunkered down bugged in, and someone shows up unexpectedly. I figure this scenario more applies to people in the country where they have land and people bugging out would likely find nice camping areas to bug out to on someone else's land :)

A good point. The dogs should have tipped them off that there is someone who lives nearby.... so out of all of the places the choose to live, why just across the street from you and why move there in the middle of the night?

Behind my house is 10' of cactus and 2' of drainage ditch, then a brick wall. Very possible to camp there, but would be very uncomfortable.

- Do you go unarmed and ask them to leave? After all, it's only a couple people.....

No. Armed and covered if I go at all.

- Do you wake someone up? Do you call for backup?

Yes. Security and right to know.

- Do you go armed ready to tell them to gtfo?

Not until I know what they are and about. If there is room for their talents and they seem viable...?

- You get to them, and you were right. Just a woman and what could be her youngish son. Just looking for a warm/safe place to stay for the night.

What news they might have, what trade I might want, if talents are required and tribe can handle them, recruitment.
But it would weigh a lot on the kid. Not keeping or feeding a worthless dumb ass when worthwhile ones will be starving.

But my brother would take a more hard line and practical approach and I've stopped arguing a lot. The chances of them being more use than trouble and more pleasant than stupid are in the minority. Most of what you see show up you will be glad to just let move on and be sad for 'em.
So now your presence is known. Still act a tough guy or?

- What if instead of it being her young son, it was an older guy. Boyfriend maybe or some guy she met along the way?

He's on his own merits. With or without her he needs to hold his own ground.

No they aren't coming in! Someone can take a ting for tea to them. Even if I thought they were coming in, they staying out in quarantine for a couple weeks on blood cleaners and baths before they come in the temple!

A couple of people camping at 2 AM would just be the primary focus of our all night look out, and we would add a person to that look out in case more came in or they were setting us up. At 7 AM our weakest adult, armed, and so well covered with long range rifles would approach them, confront them and determine if they had value to our group or needed to be prodded on.
