Greetings one and all.
I see a societal collapse on the horizon, but am less concerned about the environmental calamities predicted. The evidence I have seen indicates the Earth is a far more resilient system than some folks give it credit for. (I am not posting to start that debate.) Having said that, I think there are skills that are needed and a paradigm shift that will be required if we and our culture are to survive.
I am currently researching how to start a school. Specifically a boarding program in rural Texas that will teach not just Logic and Rhetoric, but also REAL math and science and history rather than the drivel that passes for politically correct public education. Also on the list of classes will be agriculture and animal husbandry, mechanical engineering and repair, minor medical, and, of course, martial training to protect oneself and those close to you.
With a new generation of self-sufficient young people who can think for themselves, I really think we have a shot at turning this country around and maybe even saving some of the things that made it great in the first place.
Having said all that... I am going to need to start looking for staff willing to teach youngsters how to take care of themselves as well as math and science and herbalism that far surpasses Common Core (skin crawling). I will also be in need of funding sources to pay for facilities, supplies, and salaries.

Any suggestions on where to start looking for good people willing to teach and live on site and funding to pay their salaries?

Well, you picked the right state to try this in. Some of the "Peoples Republic" states would make you jump through so many hoops, you would probably die of old age before you got it going.

As for who to staff it with, this may sound crazy, but don't the Mormons have a requirement to do missionary work for one year? A recent graduate may be interested. Sounds like you share a few beliefs with them.

Private Schools are still highly regulated in most states so you should probably get the requirements from TX. You'll probably need to hire a good CPA Firm that understands the tax laws of Private or Independent Schools as well as a good attorney to assist you in correctly organizing the School.

Once established, you will need to come up with the funding. Buildings will need to be built or refurbished according to Code, the last thing you want is the government coming down on you for Code Violations especially with children living there.

To do this right, I hope you have access to deep pockets. Good luck, I think you have a great idea.

You may be able to bypass much of the hoopla by creating a commune. Calling it a church may even be better for tax purposes. Members could say that they're "home schooling" their kids and you guys could put your own spin on the state required curriculum. If it were me, I would focus on teaching everyone how to live, be self-sufficient, and learn a trade (blacksmithing, wood working, etc.). I have a masters in education and can tell you that absolutely none of what I've learned will be of any value after SHTF.

If I can get adequate funding from donations, et al. I intend to have both a boarding program to suit children from all over the country and a day program for children from the small communities within commuting distance. The funding is a major issue because the small towns within commuting distance are somewhat economically depressed, so I will need to find ways to keep tuition down to make the program accessible to them.

I have been looking into the tax implications of a religious school vs a church. I think a non-denominational religious organization/school will offer the best route. It can be tax exempt and allow for deductible donations from other organizations and corporations as well as individuals. And I don't necessarily need a preacher on staff, although I hope to eventually.

I though about posting this for a while.

Allow me to offer some advice, as someone who has lived (as a subject) of your dream and experiment.

The instant, THE INSTANT, you sense that things may be going in a poor direction, shut it down, and walk away.

I do wish you luck. The public education system is in bad shape, the young today don't seem to read at all, for pleasure, and that is a shame, I can't imagine it. What a loss. Vet your staff carefully, and lay out a good, solid plan to protect those in your charge. And then protect them, with your life.

Hope it works out for you.
