Hi I am wondering about setting up a private connection of some sort, for comunication between two places about 100 miles apart.
To be honest I have no idea how I would do this (or if it is even possible) but would welcome any sugestions.

It would have to function on little electricity, be affordable and not have to rely on a cable between the two places.

I know that it would not be easy to build, but even if I did'nt build it, it would be very interesting to see what other people think about this.

ps.I am new here and I don't know if I have posted this in the right place, sorry if I have.

Welcome to the forum jintyjop! The technology for what you're requesting has been around for many decades. Ham (amatuer) radio, Shortwave (am) radio, shortwave is for listening but you can still get useful info during storms/natural disasters, and for shorter distances, CB (citizens band) radio, and more recently FRS radio. Much of this equipment can be found on ebay. Many members here are a far better resource than me. Still ask away we have some great folks here. Again welcome to the forum. have a good weekend.

I haven't got a comms radio because there's nobody I'd need to stay in touch with when SHTF (I'm more of a lone wolf), but there's this bunch of radio threads you might like to look at, I gather there are 3 approaches, (correct me if I'm wrong)-
1- HAM radio which is very long range for talking to people anywhere in the world, but you have to take a government test before they'll give you a licence.
2- CB radio, there's no test and anybody can get one but the range is much less than HAM, say 25 miles?
3- Cheap walky-talkies that can be picked up easy in most stores, but the range is just a couple of miles?
