i made a few. i'm not very good at it yet and i cant aim for nothin. i cant throw a ball ten feet but with my atlatls i can get a dart about 40 yards but i never measured.

Thats cute, but my sling shot loaded with ball bearings is fast, accurate and deadly to a fault.

atlatls are the bow and arrow's predicessor (sp?). mammoths, elk, buffalo,moose, etc were all taken down with atlatls.

i'm not saying a sling shot is not a good weapon. it is. i just think there isnt going to be one weapon good for every possible hunting/killing/defense aspect.

my darts are work in progress. i havent been able to make larger ones of actual hunting size. current ones are about 4ft with target tips.
actual hunting darts should be about 8ft with arrowheads, etc. tips.

I had no idea what an atlatl was all about. I read your article and thought that finding the right kind of branch would be tough. I decided to do a youtube search. So far there is little there that can't be found. I have never made an arrow either but I did find how to use an atlatl interesting. Looks like a serious amount of practice though.

Um, sorry for my ignorance, but even looking at the pictures, what the HELL is a atlatl? Reason Im asking is Im at work and we cant' access youtube.

If all you have is a spear, then the atlatl makes your spear the Barret 50 of spears. But if you can get more than a spear (slingshot, bow, Barret 50) then your spear and atlatl are just an interesting coffee table conversation starter.

The atlatl is a long (6-8 feet) dart or arrow that is launched using a thrower that basically doubles the length of your arm. They can be very efficient hunting weapons for those who master them. They are more difficult to master than a bow but are effective against much larger game than bows are usually use for.

walks with goats- thats awesome, thanks for the pics. I appluad you. I know only what I have seen on t.v. about atlatles, and you mentioned you are not accurate yet,but im sure its just a matter of practise and time, and you seem determined.

Poster didn't say "she was betting her life on using an atlatle to hunt and defend herself", she is merely passing on great information about a primative but very effective skill. And the purpose of her post is to see if anyone else is using one, I know I read a post last month on another lady that was wanting to actually legally take game with one. A blowgun is no match for a 50 BAR, but we still like shooting blowguns.
