I have a 5 gallon "jerry can" made for water. How long will the water last if I fill it up? Do I need to treat it in any way? I plan on buying more of these if it is practical to store in this way. Thanks!
In my experience, Not very long 71. I have tryed this in the past with Jerry cans for fuel and water. They aren't 100% sealed so the water went off after being in my basement for 2 months. I tryed it out and my goodness was that aweful!

I store my bulk (55gal) water for one year and rotate it out by using it for irrigation purposes but properly treated I would not hesitate to store it for 3 to 5 years...in the proper container.
You can store water for up to 6 months in a jerry can if you treat it with bleach. Some people store it longer (1 year +). Here is a helpful chart. I believe this is for treatment for long-term storage. There is a good podcast on this subject. Here is the link to it.
