Now this explains why so many rick folk are building bunkers.TECH BLACKOUT ? Huge solar storm which could WIPE OUT modern technology expected by 2020 | Science | News | Daily ExpressResearchers have warned that there is roughly a 12 per cent chance that a solar storm could smash into Earth by the end of the decade.
The powerful event would likely be as huge as the Carrington Event, which occurred on 1859.
The solar storm which hit 150 years ago was so powerful that its southern auroras could be seen as far north as Queensland in Australia.
Today, in a modern world so dependent on technology, the implications would be far more severe.

Its an interesting threat since we once had such a storm impact north America. Its just none of us were alive then and electronics at that time were quite insignificant compared to now. The only thing is scientist told us that 2014-15 was the cycle in which solar storms were at their worst. So who's extending that to 2020 and why? (it makes me wonder what they are selling) Sorry I get cynical these days.
It's gonna happen we just don't know when & it's past due. What really gets me is they could protect the grid for around 2 billion dollars, but there're more worried about what Trump tweets. Still a bunch of losers on the hill...
I prep for a variety of circumstances, but such an event that could harm most electronics & take down the grid for a very long time, well those are the threats that worry me the most. Some threats are just possibilities, such as a cyber attack on the grid, a nuke going off (maybe EMP) or financial collapse. Other events are certain to happen & some are due or past due. A massive solar eruption is one as they happen all the time & it is just a matter of time before we get hit again. When not if. The Yellowstone super volcano is past due as it normally explodes pretty regularly every 600,000 years. The last one was 640,000 years ago. Such a blast would put a dense layer of ash over most of the country & the ash cloud would impact global temps & weather conditions for years.
Sure, we'll probably be hit by a coronal mass ejection soon. We've been hit many times before. Unless it's huge, equivalent to Carrington say (the big ones are rare events), the grid probably won't be destroyed forever. We have solar observation satellites now that will give us 1-2 days warning, a warning system is in place among the major utilities, and procedures are in place to disconnect the big transformers to prevent catastrophic damage.

Some facsimile of this article pops up every month. And every single time I see it, before ever clicking, I rightly predict that it's a UK site.
A massive CME having a chance to hit Earth is relatively small, given the giant expanse of space that separates us, the speed we are moving, our tiny size by comparison to the sun, and the huge solar surface that is always pointing out away from us being so much larger than the small cone pointing right at us.
There have been MANY CME events, even during our lives, but they blast off into space and miss us by vast margins.
Yes, it *could* happen. But there is no guarantee. Be prepared, not worried.

I just finished reading a book where the planet suffered the consequences of the Van Allen Belt failing. One of these days, if we don't kill ourselves I'm sure nature will. If I'm still around when it happens I just hope whatever "it" is falls on my head - lol!
Natural causes are beyond our control. Prepping for them is smart especially since this has happened at least once to which we know. I'm probably more worried about man made causes. EMP attack. A hack on the power grid. The Saudi's cutting oil production (ok I digress).
A CME produced geomagnetic storm can happen anytime or (not likely) no time.
We all prep for different reasons. A lot of us prep for many reasons combined.
I fear a geomagnetic storm more so than an EMP or a grid hack.
I really want one of these!Hidden Content
