We all prep for different reasons. A lot of us prep for many reasons combined.
I fear a geomagnetic storm more so than an EMP or a grid hack.
I just noticed your promotion, paraquack. Congratulations!

Did anybody else ever see that movie, "The Core", with Hilary Swank? Terrible movie with a stupid premise, but it played with this same event being triggered by the primary problem of the film. Due to "mysterious" circumstances, the planets core (presumed to be a rotating ball of molten metal) stops turning. This causes the Earth's magnetic field (presumed to be created by the rotating core) to disintegrate. The result of this failure causes the Van Allen Belts to dissipate, which then allows uninhibited solar radiation to strike the planet's surface. The only scene I can recall, showing the effect of this, is when a "beam" of solar radiation pierces through and hits the water in San Francisco bay. If immediately flash boils the water and begins to cut a path toward the Golden Gate bridge. Some dude heading into work gets 3rd degree burns on the entire length of his arm that he had hanging out his open car window.

Like I said, dumb movie. But the Van Allen Belts breaking down would royally screw us.

We may actually be in the beginning stages of a magnetic pole reversal, during which we we have diminished or no protection from solar radiation. An anomalous magnetic region has formed in the South Atlantic that has scientists concerned.

Not to worry, a reversal will take thousands of years to occur. Probably.

    P.S. Yeah, bad movie.

First you have to give up. First you have to know, not fear, know that someday you're going to die.

They don't want to spend the money because it means they're gonna have to raise taxes and they're more worried about getting re-elected than our welfare.

It's not a tax issue. It's a spending issue. The federal government collected 3.3 TRILLION DOLLARS in revenue in 2016. They're getting plenty of money in taxes. What they're unwilling to do is cut spending to any program to properly fund a necessary hardening of our infrastructure.

If Russia or China were to develop some new super weapon, I have no doubt the military/politicians would find the billions needed to counter that threat. But here we have our power grid which is very vulnerable, not only to a solar event, but to attack from hacking or EMP, and yet they do nothing. The government has studied this & knows the dangers where that up to 90% of our population could perish from an extended grid down scenario. But nope, as usual, they do nothing. My plan is to be a survivor and not a statistic.

    Scenario...

Bring in 100 terrorists across our less than well guarded national borders. Hook them up with vehicles, weapons, and prepositioned explosive caches with timer equipped explosives and RPGs or mortars. They take 3-5 days to spread out to their assigned areas (50 teams of 2 terrorists each) while staying in smaller hotels and keeping a low profile. All targets have been previously researched with firing points already calculated.

They spend about 12 hours placing the explosives with set timers on high voltage towers and exposed gas/oil pipes. Say each team places 10 of these explosive charges resulting in 500 major problems in our energy infrastructure that will go off shortly after they commit their attack. Now, at a set time each team pops an RPG or two (or a few mortar shells) at a major electrical production facility or refinery before driving away to the next targets. Since they are launching their attacks from 1/2 mile away they are unlikely to be seen until they've launched several attacks.

So now we've got roughly 500 major problems with our electrical and gas delivery system in addition to having half of our generator plants and refineries off line for months.

Any of these terrorists who are still alive after running out of explosives can then go in the closest elementary school and start shooting or release a bio-engineered deadly pathogen. Or perhaps release the pathogen in the mall or airport before they start their attack.

Since the OPs article says there is only a 12% chance of the solar storm in the next 4 years I'd be more concerned about other things taking the grid down.

Scary shit there. Makes me feel better about my new Humless 1500 watt, 100 amp hour solar generator that just came in today & is charging in the barn. This has double the amp hours of my older 1500 watt model but is just a bit bigger. I just love these units.

Well about every 6 to 8 months someone brings this crap up. Hey we lived for thousands of years without electricity I think we will be ok, have to do more hands on work but non the less ok. Now the Internet your taptalk g8000 won't it will be fried no matter how you save even if you do all you'll have is a fancy alarm clock calculator.
And main marine nothing happened in October the stocks came through the super moons came and went now that trump is up the Wall Street is actually doing ok again just a reminder like I said. Would.
