This is why I advise buckshot or slugs for defense against a bear. This bear was turned and flipped by the shot, but it was not stopped.
She meant to kill that guy, and he was brave to stand his ground and shoot.

So if charged by a Griz, Kick your shoes off , that will slow it down so you can load some real shells in your shotgun.

I've said it before, I'll say it again - for defensive purposes your 12 gauge should be loaded with NOTHING SMALLER than OO buck. Against humans or animals.
All this crap about birdshot, or #4 buck is just that - crap.

My #4 reloads would blast a hole in 3/4 ply at 30 yards, back in '72

My buddy took the floor out of his blind, so we shot the f out of it

#4 Buck would be better though

It takes penetration to get the job done. Anything lighter than OO won't penetrate far at all.
#4 buck is still too light. Against a bear, all you would do is piss it off. Against a determined or drugged human you might get killed with your own weapon.

There is a reason cops and the military who use shotguns use OO or slugs and not something smaller.

I agree. I would prefer slugs versus a bear, but 00 buck would work as well.

We went hiking in Wyoming last summer and I had a .357 Mag, Son 1 had a .45 ACP and Son 2 had a .40 SW.

The next day I was wore out and stayed in town and Son 1, Son 2 went above 8000 ft and saw large bear, brown male. They took photos and later we showed the pics to a ranger. He suggested nothing less than a .44 Mag or a 45.70 for that particular bear.

I may never hike the Teton's again but if I do, I will have a Marlin 1895BL chambered in 45.70. And that's a fac jac!

he was not point blank... he was a good 20-30 feet away which gives the shot lots of time to spread. if he fired at the head at 10 feet even with number 9 that would be one dead bear

of course at 10 feet you would need to change your underwear

if I knew it was a bear out there I am walking out with my pump with slugs and buck shot
