Fortunately I don't have to choose just one. However, here in the good ole USofA, it's tough to argue against an AR just based on the sheer numbers of guns, parts and ammo in circulation.

I have a couple of AR's in 5.56, one in 6x45 and another in 300 Whisper/Black Out. Now I am thinking about one in 6.5 Grendel. Its kinda like the Legos of long guns. Parts are all over the place and reasonably priced. It can be easily configured to fill just about any role and does a pretty good job at most of them. In 5.56 version its a little lacking on punch or penetration at longer ranges but a quick upper swap to a caliber such as the 6.5 Grendel solves that pretty well. It doesnt take a whole lot of maintenance to keep it running reliably, just keep it half assed clean and lubed and it can chug a long, longer than your likely to. Ammo is pretty plentiful and accessories abound every where. Ammo is cheap and plentiful compared to many other options. The author in the video makes a lot of good points in that regard. Is it perfect? No...but I think youd be hard pressed to come up with something more practical or effective more times than not.
I also have a handful of AR's. My favorite is my Grendel. If I need to stop a vehicle fast I have a 450 Bushmaster in an AR. But for longer range my 6.5 Grendel is the one.

If I could only have one gun it would be a 12 gauge pump shotgun.

If it had to be a rifle I would go with a bolt action 30-06, preferably a Springfield 1903. Badass rifle chambered in a common round. Too bad I don't own one

This is one of my 03A3 rifles, also have an 03A4 sniper and two straight 03A3's.

    All are in Cal. 30.

The scope on this one is an L&S M3 ultra with MIL DOT RETICLE and 30/06 BDC turret.

This one shoots SUB MOA with M73 match and 30APM2.

That is an M60 flash suppressor on the muzzle.

With the exception of the 30/30's all others rifles are in military calibers for obvious reasons.

The 7.62 NATO and 30M2 will take care of most, 7.92mm falls right in for final defensive fires. if not the 50m2 sure as hell will.

My least worry is guns and ammo.

Ah yup, with 55 year old LC M73 it shoots 0.6 MOA, using handloads it will do 0.45 MOA using Sierra 180 gr. Matchking Hp's.

The scope is a 10X, and has a Timney trigger set at 3.5 pounds.

I built it 27 years ago for using APM2 which runs about 1.0 MOA and better depending which lot I use..

The furthest I have shot it was 1,100 yards at man size steel silhouettes.

Unmolested 1903 will shoot well, would not be my first go to SHTF. To heavy 30.06. Still going for the AR if I have only 1 and have to move now.
had this 1903 a long time.

One of the finest looking battle rifles the US ever fielded. My 48 year old eyes can't shoot that fine blade sight anymore
