The courts and why we are in this mess

If you question why we are in this mess read this one.

Duval was charged with illegal possession of a controlled substance and driving to endanger in 2012. He agreed to pay $450 in court costs to have the charges dismissed. The warrant was issued when he failed to pay any money and he was picked up New Year’s Day.
Not a bad deal there for the jerk but there is more.
The judge also offered to wipe out the debt if Duval agreed to spend a few days in jail. Duval declined the offer.

Na na judge I aint havin none of that.

    Oh there is more.
After a short recess, Duval proposed putting up his $85 Nikes. The judge said he would return the sneakers if Duval paid $100 in $25 weekly installments after Jan. 13.

So Possession, driving to endanger plead down to 450 and drop. He skips gets picked up post his shoes as bail and gets it all dropped to $100.

Milwaukee WI DA regularly pleas illegal possession of a weapon down to a parking ticket. No wonder we have so many bodies in the street.

I gave up a long time ago trying to make sense out of what passes for justice in our courts.

Define "mess". There are lot's of people who feel the drug laws are foolish and in many states they have legalized marijuana. The judge in this case may not be out of line with his community. If that's the case, the judge may be sitting there having to impose a penalty when neither he nor the local citizenry feels it is appropriate to do so.

We are in a bigger mess than I though. No wonder we have so many on the streets to deal with . Reckless endangerment and skipping. He never even paid the 450 to have the charges dropped.
Good luck yall I won't be in your cities. Come out here the Judge won't do you any good.

Good Grief Sounds like "Crime is fine in the USA" Bit different this side of the pond, here you can get jailed for almost anything,
Jails are overcrowded, 4 to a cell built for 1, & 23 hour a day bang up.
And god help you if your caught with a firearm, 20 years is the current sentences being handed out.

By the time a gang banger gets caught for their first murder, they have been allowed to walk on pages of felonies. They will serve less than 8 years and many only 4 years. Once out they will commit another.
The courts sends a loud and clear message early on do the crime there aint no time to serve Common in places like Madison do a felony or two they make you a deal. Leave Dane county no charges. They were even providing transportation to relocate them to Milwaukee and Racine.
To end up in prison you really have to work at it. You can't just go out and do a couple crimes and get in .
People need to wake up to what is really going on in our Justice system.

Well, we've been filling the jails with low level drug users like the one in the article. The result is we have 5-10 times the number of people incarcerated as other developed countries. Do you want to lock up serious criminals or some clown who would rather smoke marijuana than get drunk? For the past 40 years we've been chasing these low level drug users instead of the serious criminals and the prisons are full.

Personally I think we need a major rethink on what's a crime so the violent criminals wind up behind bars and clowns who aren't worth more than a pair of sneakers aren't clogging up the courts or the jails.
