We used what was called fou gasse behind the outer concertina wire barrier around our perimeter. I understand it was a standard thing on most base camps. These were 55 gallon drums of napalm buried in the ground with an explosive kicker strong enough to get them airborne a few feet and set them off. They were fired from the perimeter bunkers using a standard claymore mine clacker.
    Used only in dire emergencies.

When I was with the 29th ID we set one off at night - but we used just a wee bit too much tnt to boust the fuel out of the drum and we had it set to go straight up in the air. The folks in the city about 15 miles away swore we nuked the place

we used a demo shaped charge behind the barrel,
aimed then buried the barrel and ordnance to tamp the charge and focus the blast down the fire lane.
The gas with M1 thickener formed a ball 30 feet in diameter for two hundred yards.
