tap water for 55 gallon storage?

We just bought a Berkey water filter and have a river nearby (that would definately need to be boiled if not ran through the Berkey) but my husband asked about storing water in 55 gallon water barrels. He wanted to know if we could store tap water without having to add something to it for storage since we are going to run it through our Berkey to drink. Will it go bad even with the Chlorine the add in it?

    Thanks in advance,

I would boil it if you store it and use it for consumption. Better safe then sorry!
Any reason is the perfect reason to prepare.

I store my drinking water in 55 gal. HDPE FDA approved plastic barrels. I use my local tap water that is already chlorinated but still add 3 tablespoons of Clorex non-scented bleach per 55 gals. Water treated like this can easily store up to 4 years and still be potable though I recycle my supply every year during the summer so that I can utilize it for watering plants and not waste it. Here are two links that might help you in this effort.
