    Root Cellaring

Everyone used to have one, but they've since gone the way of the dodo. They are great for food storage. It's almost like having an underground refrigerator. One of the greatest downsides is the humidity which is great for fresh produce...but not for a general purpose storage.

This couple built a earthbag root cellar (in 3 parts. 2nd video is actual build, 3rd video is a follow up)

There are tons of videos & information available on the different types and ideas for 'cellaring'. If you don't have the room or resources to build an actual underground room, consider digging a hole to bury a heavy duty plastic trash can with screw top lid and line it with straw or shavings to store extra potatoes or carrots or apples or????

Not everyone. Some of us would be wading through mud if we tried to dig such a cellar.

In m case, underwater! I can't dig more than 2' down without hitting water - even in the summer! Great idea though and wish I could do it - cheaply...we only have a crawl space under our house.
