    Expiration Dates

So I've been looking for a tourniquet to add to my first aid kit (Those things are surprisingly hard to find around here). I found one in an ifak I found at a military supply store here. So I'm looking through this thing to see if there's anything else I can use and I'm looking at this compression bandage. It expired in 2011. So I'm wondering, what's wrong with this thing. The package looks fine and is still sealed. Is there a chemical in there that might have broken down or something? Somebody school me.

If it's literally just a compression bandage, and not one of those with a clotting agent (like QuickClot), then the only thing to be worried about is the sterility of the bandage.
If it is still vacuum sealed and no air has entered the package, it's likely just fine.
I would guess the expiration is more for the outer packaging than the bandage itself. What more do you expect cotton to do but soak up blood, ya know?

Working for a large company, I'm in charge of the wall mounted first aid stations.
Tell me why a "sterile eye wash" sealed in a plastic bottle can EXPIRE in MAY 2019, but be good until then?
Of course we cant keep and use expired items at work, so they get rotated out. (To my hands, kinda like a defective lifting strap)
I think if its sealed, that it is fine, especially if its just a sterile bandage or thing like an alcohol wipe.

Thanks y'all. I was pretty much thinking along those lines too. Just thought I'd check to make sure.

whoopie, 4 more months for epi-pens... or you can keep them available until the liquid inside turns cloudy, which none of mine have done yet for years after the expiration dates...

Oh, and my doctor had no problem prescribing it for me, just tell them that you are allergic to bee stings and other "stuff".
