Our son, a trained Fireman/Paramedic has taught us about Hemostatic Dressings and using Chitosan agents to control bleeding. The Tourniquet was the only thing that I knew about for many years. We should take this reminder to stock up on hemostats etc.

    Thanks Camel

Stopping bleeding is very important, so much that it is number one in the US Army's 4 Life Saving Steps, a part of battlefield first aid (circa 1968).
    1. Stop the bleeding
    2. Clear the airway
    3. Protect the wound
    4. Treat for shock

A severed femoral artery in the leg and the patient can bleed to death in less than 4 minutes.

Great article. I need to go through my first aid kits and review what I have left.

Some people are known to be allergic to chitosan ( usually those allergic to sea food). Chitosan was famous in weight loss suplements some years ago and people ended up in the hospital.
Maybe test it on yourself and your family before stockpilling it.

There is also a product that walmart sells called stops bleeding. Lou Ferigno endorses it so it must be good.

We had Stop the Bleed training at our monthly prepper meet a couple months ago. An EMT fellow gave the training. Good training, and it motivated me to not get hurt or shot. As if being unfortunate enough to suffer such an injury is bad enough, someone is then going to stuff a couple of feet of treated guaze into the wound? Yikes!!!!

It beats the alternative, which would be a bleed out.
In the old days it was direct pressure or a tourniquet. Employing a tourniquet can result in the loss of a limb, and direct pressure may not do the job.

Quik Clot and Celex are miracle workers, from what I have read. Both of them can stop arterial bleeding in a very short time.
